Ask Away Friday: Blissful Snapshots

This week, I swapped questions for Ask Away Friday with Rea, who blogs over at Blissful Snapshots. She is a blogger who lives in Cebu, Philippines and enjoys photography. You won’t be disappointed! She is very interesting and her page is beautiful. When you get done here, hop over and check out the questions I asked her and how she answered.

1)  How long have you been blogging? What do you think is the most important thing you’ve learned through blogging? I have been blogging for about 5 months. I started my blog back in September of 2014. I think the most important thing I have learned so far is how to actually start a blog! I use self-hosted WordPress, and although I have heard it is one of the easiest platforms, I had a hard time figuring it out at first. I was almost in tears a couple times! But I pressed on and got it figured out. Somewhat. There is still quite a bit I don’t know and I’m sure I’m not using it to it’s full capacity, but the important thing is I am learning. I’ve already learned so much these last 5 months that would have been mind boggling to me a year ago. I like that I am learning and improving instead of just staying stagnant in my knowledge and skills. Plus blogging has given me the creative outlet that I craved for so long.

2) What is something you don’t like about blogging? I think I would have to say all the technical aspects. I would love to just sit and write and have someone else deal with plug-ins and design and all that fun stuff. But like I said it is a learning experience!

3)  You talk about essential oils a lot on your blog. What made you so drawn into them? My son and I were both having some health issues last year-mine related to pregnancy and his related to the seasons-and after much research I decided to give essential oils a try. Since then, I have been using them for almost everything and been able to replace so many chemical substances that we were using in our home and putting in/on our bodies. I am still regularly amazed by how well they work! Like, I will try an essential oil for something new, and then want to tell everyone I know how well it worked, because in the back of my mind I still don’t expect them to, even though I know better. In the past few months it has turned into a business for me, which has grown out Continue reading

Ask Away Friday: Love and Romance edition

Happy February everyone! This week we are doing a Valentine’s Day theme for Ask Away Friday. I am teaming up with Lysa from Welcome To My Circus to give you all the fun details of our love lives. Well, maybe not all the details, but it will still be fun!

After you read my answers to her questions, hop over and check out what I asked her, and how she answered.

Ask Away Friday Love and Romance Edition

Let’s get started:

1) How did you and your husband meet? Was it love at first sight? We actually met at work. His family used to own a pizza shop, and I got a job there. I thought he was super cute. He thought I was funny because I wore slacks to work for my first few weeks, even though every one else wore jeans or shorts. I was just so used to slacks being the dress code for my previous jobs, and it took me a while to catch on. At least I had him noticing me (wink). He still makes fun of me for that.

2) Where was the most romantic place EVER that you went to on a date? Tell us about that date. The most romantic date was actually a weekend. We spent a couple nights at a bed and breakfast in Mendocino. It was our first road trip/weekend trip together. Mendocino is a really cute little town on the Northern California coast. We spent our days walking along the beaches and the cliffs, going thrifting in Fort Bragg just a little more north, and walking around all the shops. There was a little Irish pub there where we went for all but one of our meals–it had the BEST pot roast. We ended up becoming friends with the cook and waitress, and they took us on an evening cruise to show us the best scenery and look at the stars. We also ended up going on a little hike and discovering a secluded cove where we spent an afternoon. And the bed and breakfast had a huge bathtub where we used all their bubble bath! I’ve never seen so many bubbles in my life! We are planning on going back for our anniversary this year. I can’t wait!

3) Which Valentine’s was your most memorable and why? I think probably the year we went to a very upscale steakhouse. The vegetables were huge. Like monstrously huge! And it was the first (and only) time I’ve ever tried lobster. I didn’t like it at all. Maybe because I was pregnant, but I haven’t worked up the nerve to try it since.

4) If you were to give advice about love to your daughters, what would you say? How would it differ from what you would tell your sons? I have a teenage daughter, so I do often give her advice. Luckily for me she isn’t dating yet, but I want her to be prepared when she does. I tell her not to date someone just to have a date. It is better to wait for the right guy that God has for her, rather than date around and be known as “that girl.” (This is me totally speaking from first-hand experience, by the way!) I also tell her to pay attention to how a guy treats his mom and his sisters, because he won’t treat her any better than how he treats them. I am constantly giving her little tidbits of advice whenever the opportunity arises, but these are the two things I think I say most often. As for my son…he is just a little guy! I’m not ready to think about that yet! But…I think I would tell my son that he needs to treat a lady like a lady. I would tell him to only treat her how he would want another guy to treat one of his sisters. And to guard her purity as well as his own. I think a great piece of advice would be to always date with marriage in mind. If you can’t see yourself eventually marrying that person, there is no need to date them.

5) When you were a teenager, who did you have the BIGGEST crush on? Brad Pitt. Like every other girl on the planet! Funny enough, I am totally not a fan of his anymore.

6) What would your perfect romantic evening be like? Be as descriptive as you can. Hmmmm….this is a tough one. I think an evening at home, just the two of us with our kids somewhere else would be nice. The table would be set with a pretty tablecloth and two pillar candles, lit. There would be rose petals scattered on the table with romantic music playing softly. Our dinner would be steak, potatoes, fresh bread and a salad. After dinner we would take a walk over to the park and look at the stars, then come home and cuddle under a blanket while watching a movie, and take turns giving each other massages. Not having to worry about the baby waking up or one of the kids coming out to get a drink or go to the bathroom. And then the best part would be getting to sleep in together in the morning.

7) Tell us about a dating horror story or an embarrassing dating story? Be sure to give us the details! Many, MANY years ago when we were wild and reckless, we went to San Francisco for a day date. We had recently been watching some spy show series on tv, so I guess spies were on my brain. My husband (then boyfriend) went into a shop or something, and while I was waiting for him I struck up a conversation with some random guy. He ended up telling me he was here in the states on business, from Australia. Well, I must have gotten it in my head that his accent didn’t sound Australian enough or something (as if I would know!) and as my husband came back I was accusing this total stranger of being a spy. He kept insisting he wasn’t, and as my husband was apologizing to him, I took off because I really thought this guy was a spy and wanted to be as far away from him as possible. My poor husband had to come find me. In San Francisco. And then to top it all off I threw up all over myself on the way home. So yeah…pretty horrific and embarrassing!

8) What is that one thing that made you fall in love with your husband? His confidence. He is so sure of himself and who he is. It’s very attractive. Especially since I haven’t always been the most confident person.

9) Who said “I love you” first, you or your husband? Tell us the story. I can’t tell the whole story because it was in our wild days, and quite frankly I can’t remember it all! But it was me. I said it first. We had been dating for about 6 months and spent all our free time together. I just remember we were hanging out in his room one night talking and I just leaned over and said, “I just love you so much. I mean really. I really, really, love you.” Another thing he likes to make fun of me for :-) But he said it back and the rest is history!

10) If you could reenact any love story from a movie, which one would it be and why? Please describe how you and your husband might act it out. Hahaha. I really don’t know how to answer this one! Most of the movies we watch are either action and adventure or comedy. Let’s see…the Hunger Games love scene where Peeta is hiding in the creek in camouflage paint and Katniss finds him and they hide in the hole. No. Not very romantic? But that would be fun. I could be hunting him with a nerf bow and arrow, and then when I found him I could wash all the camo paint off him. And then we could find a little cave and eat a picnic of chicken soup.

Well. I think I’m starting to see myself in a not very romantic light! Quiet night at home. Hunger Games love scene. This is what 5 kids will do to you I guess (smile). This were fun questions to answer. I’d love to hear your thoughts or any of your own answers to these questions!

Ask Away Friday with The Mad Mommy

I’m excited to be doing my second post for Ask Away Friday, this time swapping questions with Echo, who blogs at The Domain of The Mad Mommy. Are you wondering why she is called that? I did too, and so I asked her! If you’d like to know, you will have to give her a visit and find out. Hint: It has to do with a book.

If you don’t know what Ask Away Friday is, it is basically a Q and A session with another blogger, to get to know each other and build friendships. If you are a blogger and would like to join, I would love to swap questions with you! Join the Facebook page here for more info.

On to the questions:

1) Naming my blog was a long and hard process. How did you come up with the name of your blog?  I guess to understand the name of my blog, you would have to know who Rahab was. She was the harlot in the Bible who hid the spies for Joshua’s army when they were going to take over Jericho. Because of her faith in God and His people (Joshua and his army), her and her family were spared and she had a changed life, becoming one of the ancestor’s of Jesus. I love this story so much because it shows how incredible God’s grace is. You would think that a harlot would never be welcome into the family of God, but this proves otherwise. God changes lives and makes them so much better. I was a drug addict, promiscuous, living a life full of sin, but God welcomed me into His family with open arms and my life has never been the same. Although I write about all kinds of things on my blog, I wanted to give glory to Him in a big way, and what better way to do that than with the name.

2) What is your favorite part of blogging? Definitely the writing. And I love reading comments on my posts.

3) You are a homeschooler and a blogger, like me! How do you balance the two? Well, to be honest, I don’t feel like I am qualified to answer this! I just started blogging back in September, so I am still figuring it all out. I can tell you that at first I wasn’t balancing them very well. LOTS of my time was going into blogging and promoting on social media and all that fun stuff, and I wasn’t putting the same attention into my kids schooling as they deserved. I have since changed some things. For example, I now wake up at 5:30 am (which totally isn’t like me!) to read my Bible and then blog for a while before my kids get up. Then during school time I focus completely on them, and I usually try to get a little blogging done while they nap, or after they are in bed if I have a post I want to get up.

4) What is your favorite thing about homeschooling? Getting to spend all day with my kids. I know some moms are totally thinking I’m crazy right now, but I don’t know what I would do with myself if they weren’t around. Every day is an adventure and a comedy!

5) With 5 kids, you have to have an arsenal or quick and easy recipes. What is your go-to quick recipe? This is something that changes frequently. For a while it was spaghetti, during colder seasons it is usually chicken and rice soup, and in the summer it is often carne asada on the grill. Right now we have been eating chicken fajitas A LOT! I grill up a bunch of chicken on the George Foreman, then saute some bell peppers and onions and serve with rice and beans, which are a staple in my house. My hubby is mexican, so he has to have them, lol.

6) What is your absolute favorite thing to cook? Probably Albondigas. It is a mexican meatball soup with carrots and potatoes. The only thing I don’t like to do is peel the potatoes, but I usually ask my teenager to do that part! I also really like to bake bread. It makes the whole house smell delicious and tastes so yummy right out of the oven with some butter. Totally not good for my weight but great for my taste buds!

7) What is your #1 comfort food? Bread. And chocolate. I could live on bread and chocolate!

8) My biggest guilty pleasure is watching bad reality TV. What is your biggest guilty pleasure? Hmmmm…..I plead the 5th!

9) If you could have one thing given to you right now, what would it be? This one is easy. It is my husband’s and my dream to one day own a ranch house on a couple acres of land. So if anyone has one they are willing to part with…(smile)

10) I am craving a tropical vacation! If you could go on a tropical vacation, all expenses paid, where would you go? I really don’t know. I’ve never been to Mexico and my husband really wants to take me to Cancun. I would like to go to Hawaii. Really anywhere exotic and tropical. I’ve never traveled father than a couple states away, so it would all be new and exiting to me!

And that’s it! I’d love to hear any of your answers to these questions in the comments! I hope you’ll come back next week for another exciting episode of Ask Away Friday!

Are you on Facebook? If so, I’d love to connect!

Ask Away Friday: My First One Ever!

I’m very excited to be participating in Ask Away Friday for the first time! Ask Away Friday is like a question and answer session between bloggers. We each ask the other 10 questions, and then answer them on our own blog. My partner today is Bobbie from Living In Retrospect, where she shares her wealth of info on blogging, saving money, and life. I love reading all the cute stories about her and her husband! You can click here to be taken to her blog, where she answers my questions.

Ask Away Friday

Alright, down to business. Here are her questions to me and my answers:

1) If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go? This is a tough one for me! I’ve always wanted to travel, but so far have only made it to 4 states! Having to narrow it down to just one place is going to be hard….but I will have to say Spain. In one of the Spanish classes I took in college, I learned a lot about the history of Spain, and I would really like to see all the architecture in person. Plus I really love Spanish culture and food in general. Still, even as I type this so many other places are popping into my head that I’ve always wanted to visit. Can I say that I want to go on a world tour? No? Then I’ll stick with Spain.

2) Tell us your blogging story. What inspired you to get started? I enjoy writing. When I was a child, I had a whole filing cabinet filled up with stories I had written, illustrated, and stapled into books. Even in college, I loved writing papers (I know, total nerd!) So a couple years ago, I started reading blogs and the desire to write got rekindled. It still took me almost 2 years to talk myself into actually doing it though! I had to get over my fear of rejection first. I figured I would rather try and fail than live my whole life thinking “what if?”

3) What is your favorite blog to follow, and what do you love about it? Does following by e-mail count? I would have to say it is The Better Mom. I don’t visit her page as often as I should, but I get her e-mails in my inbox and usually always read them. She has such wisdom when it comes to parenting, and it seems like every struggle she talks about is one that I’ve gone through or am going through at the moment. I can see her heart in helping mothers to be a better mom to their children, and I have been blessed by so many of her articles.

4) If money and time were no object, what would you do? Travel the world! I would start with buying a large RV so my family and I could travel all across the United States. It would be so fun to road-school and be able to learn about the geography and history of our country first hand. And then after a couple years of that, we’d be off to conquer the world!

5) I love how complex people are. What are two things about you that seem like they can’t be about the same person?  I know this will sound weird, but I have to have my music loud. I am happiest when music is blaring from my kitchen radio or in my car. But I can’t stand noise. If too many people are talking at once, or if the tv is too loud, I get seriously aggravated. I don’t know what it is. If everyone just sang to me instead of talking to me we would get along better, lol.

6) Tell us about a specific decision you made that has led you to the life you are living right now.  I’m not sure I can pinpoint a specific decision. I feel like every decision I’ve ever made has brought me exactly to where I am, and if I had made even one differently, I would be living a totally different life. I can tell you that the most important decision I’ve ever made was when I asked Jesus into my heart to be my Saviour. If not for that decision, nothing else would matter.

7) What is one thing you always have with you? A child. Haha. With 5 of them, it’s hard to be alone. For real though, probably a hair-tie. I usually wear my hair in a pony tail, and even when it’s down I make sure to have a hair-tie handy so I can pull it up when I need to. Although with a teenage daughter, it is getting harder for me to ever find any of my hair-ties! I’m going to have to buy stock in them.

8) How did you feel about school growing up? How do you feel about education now?
Always loved it, still do. I was a total teacher’s pet/smarty pants in elementary school. I think my love for education is one of the reasons I was drawn to homeschooling my children. I love to read and learn, and I enjoy passing that on to my children and watching their faces light up when they finally understand something we’ve been working on. I think everyone should be lifelong students. A person limits themselves when they stop expanding their knowledge.

9) What is your favorite season and why? Autumn is by far my favorite season. I enjoy watching the leaves change, the cool nights, the harvest. Even the smell in the air is different, I can’t describe it. Autumn just makes me happy.

10) What is your personal mantra? I actually don’t have one, and in fact I had to look it up just now to know exactly what a mantra was (I had an idea but wanted to be sure.) A favorite quote of mine is “Shoot for the moon, even if you miss you’ll land among the stars.” I don’t know who to give credit for that quote to, though. It was on a picture frame I bought at a thrift store years ago and it has stuck with me since then. And a Bible verse that I repeat to myself often is Philippians 4:13, which is: “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” Even though I love both of those, sometimes in my craziest days I find myself repeating “Just keep swimming. Just keep swimming,” like Dory from Finding Nemo!

Well, I had a lot of fun participating this week, I hope you all had fun reading my answers!
