How to use Essential Oils to Promote Healthy Hair

I have heard it said that a woman’s hair is a good indicator of age. Healthy hair makes a woman appear younger, whereas dry, brittle, damaged hair makes a woman appear older.

Who doesn’t want thick, shiny, lustrous, healthy hair? I know I sure do!

I am only in my early 30’s, and don’t look old yet (I hope!) but that doesn’t mean that I am going to wait until I do to start taking care of myself. One of the best beauty tips my mom ever gave me was to moisturize my skin everyday to prevent wrinkles. And this was when I was a teenager and there wasn’t a wrinkle in sight!

I believe the same can be said of hair. Take care of your healthy hair now so that you don’t have to repair it later.

So how can essential oils help?

There are 2 essential oils in particular that you should be using in your hair–Ylang Ylang and Cedarwood.

Ylang Ylang promotes thick and shiny hair.

Cedarwood may promote hair growth. Cedarwood has an earthy, woodsy aroma, so even the man in your life can benefit from using Cedarwood regularly.

I add Ylang Ylang and Cedarwood to our shampoo. Sometimes I just put a couple drops in my hand with the shampoo and then lather as usual. Lately though I have been adding the essential oils directly to my new shampoo bottles. I generally put about 20 drops of each if I am doing it this way. Then just shake before each use.

Alternatively, you could also take some coconut oil and add a few drops, then massage vigorously into your scalp. Let sit for a half hour or so, and then rinse for a more penetrating, intense application.

Wonderful idea! I do add cedarwood to my shampoo on occasion, but I’d not heard about ylang ylang for hair. I also sometimes comb olive oil through my hair as a deep conditioner. You just let it sit for a few hours before washing or rinsing out.
